2008 Football Season Update
Hello to all.  Hopefully the summer is going well for you.  It's hard to believe, but the
football season is just around the corner.

The meeting dates have been set for 2008.  All meetings will be on Sunday nights
beginning at 7:00 p.m. at West Gate on 60th and Old Cheney.  The meetings will be
on 8/10, 8/17, 8/24, 9/7, 9/21 and 10/5. Your ENOA dues will remain at $25.  In order
to help with check in, and to be eligible for the early season games, consider
mailing in your dues now to P.O. Box 22122, Lincoln, 68542.

Please log into Arbiter and update your information.  If your picture is not on Arbiter,
please download one.  It really helps to be able to put a name to face.  You can also
begin to block dates on the system. Remember to block your Fridays if you have
Varsity games.  Shane and Willie often get calls requesting available officials for
varsity games.

Everyone should have received an e-mail from the NSAA regarding the two officials'
clinics and rules meetings on August 16.  If you did not get the notice from the NSAA,
log on to the NSAA website, then go to Login (above Sports), click on officials, then
enter your passcode.  Click on the messages from the NSAA, and the clinic info will
pull up.

The ENOA crew will be doing the clinic in Grand Island.  We believe these clinics will
help officials of all experience levels.  Please consider attending either clinic.  Our
clinicians are Greg Maschman, Ken Marr, Kris Van Meter, Doug Wyatt, Dan Walker,
and Steve Nelson.  The clinic in Millard will be virtually the same as the one in Grand
Island. Both clinic groups have been meeting together since April in order to assure
consistency between the two clinics.  If you have questions or did not get the
registration form from the NSAA, contact Dan Walker at 434-3473 or
dwalker@westgatebank.com <dwalker@westgatebank.com>.  Space in these
clinics is limited so send in the form right away.

The ENOA will also provide a 4-man clinic.  The date and time has been tentatively
set for Saturday, August 30 at Seacrest from 9-11 and will be conducted in
conjunction with the first annual 9th grade Football Jamboree.  All 6 LPS schools
will participate in a football tournament.  Please mark this date down and come out
and participate. You will be able to rotate through any or all 4 positions, and you will
be evaluated.  The ENOA has committed to LPS that we will have enough officials to
cover 3 game situations that will be running concurrently.  If you are interested in
working the Jamboree or have questions, again contact Dan Walker.

We have attempted to make the meetings more informative this year, and we have
spent a lot of time planning each meeting.  A special thanks to Don Ellingson who
has spent numerous hours this summer dissecting game tapes and starting a
library of training tapes for use at each meeting.  Kudos also to Mark Weiting and
Steve Nelson who have both agreed to head up the taping/evaluation of officials
again this year. If you get a call from them asking to help, please consider their
request.  Each meeting has an agenda we will follow.  All meetings will begin with
introduction and updates followed by open discussions (rules/situations),
presentation, tape review and scheduling will be last.  The specific agendas for
each meeting are as follows:

8/10:   Introductions, 1st 50 questions, running plays (Steve Nelson), Arbiter Info,
Midgets

8/17:   Introductions, 2nd 50 questions, pass plays (Mark Weiting), expectation of
officials, scheduling.

8/24:   Introductions, open discussion, punts/turnovers/goal line (Dan Walker).  Tape
session, scheduling

9/7:    Introductions, open discussion, kick offs/PAT/field goals (Kris Van Meter).
Tape session, scheduling.

9/21:   Introductions, open discussion, deadball/signals/communication (Don
Ellingson).  Tape session, scheduling.

10/5:   Introductions, open discussion, highlights/lowlights, tape session, chain
crew signup, scheduling

Our intention this year is to emphasize 5-man mechanics.  We will continue to tape
our 4-man games and discuss these mechanics too. Please try to attend the
meetings.

As noted, a representative from Midgets will be at our first meeting. Please consider
working a Sunday or two to help out that organization.

August will be here before we know it.  Now is the time to check to see if you have all
your equipment, down counter, clip, flag, bean bag, whistle and game cards.  Try on
your uniform and make sure it hasn't shrunk since last year.  If your uniform has
become worn, replace the items.  If you need to get back into shape, start now.
Remember how you look has a huge influence on people's perception of you and
the job you are doing.

We have retained all the schools we contracted with last year, and in fact we have
added Beatrice.  As you know, Mondays are very busy days from a scheduling
standpoint.  Please make every effort to keep them open for us.

Everyone of us needs to be actively recruiting new officials.  Talk to friends, people at
work, people at the gym, wherever.  It is imperative that we all do our part to bring in
new officials.

If any of you have any comments, questions, or complaints, please feel free to
contact any board member at any time.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone on August 10, and to a safe, successful,
and enjoyable year.

The ENOA Board.
